You know there are some things that just *GO* together.  The obvious: red wine and laughter, camembert and grapes, dogs and walks… Another is fibre reactive dyes & fabric.

Space Dyed Fabrics and Threads

This last week I hosted a teenager birthday party with four (quite giggly but well behaved) girls to make an individually designed silk scarf.

First they learned how to use a tjanting and hot wax by practicising drawing with hot wax onto paper to see how the wax needs to penetrate the paper (fabric) to ensure dyes don’t bleed from one area to another.

Having stretched their silk, waxed their designs onto the silk it was time to paint.

Painting with procion dyes is mesmerising.  The silk seems to suck the dye from your paintbrush and springs into life with the sheen from the silk fibres. The girls had a great time.

The Second Best Bit for me was my treat… Space Dyed Fabric & Threads.

I used up the end of the dyes to create some one-of-a-kind fabrics and threads that will be complementary when used together in a future project.

Just lovely and delicious and almost good enough to eat!

Hope you’ve had a fun week. I have.
